How the draw can be checked
When the appeals are closed, the pool of eligible entries is published here as a manifest: the sorted list of their leaves (the tickets on each applicant's receipt), the number of seats, the rules version, and the drand round whose randomness decides the draw. Two approvers sign it by its digest. Nothing the foundation holds enters the randomness.
Anyone can check a draw from the manifest file and the round's value alone, with the standalone verifier:
download verify.html (SHA-256 15955ee137a92494b700c0e250b923af6596657b6cf6b143ad6aa0eb7225deaa), open it from your disk, and give it the manifest and an RPC address, or drand's signature for the round. Your own ticket: recompute your leaf from your
receipt and look for it in the manifest.
Each manifest names the SHA-256 of the verifier it was built with. The file offered here is the current one; if its
hash differs from the one a manifest names, take that call's verifier from the foundation's public repository
Opening-Science/fellowship-draw, where it was published with the manifest.
The manifest's digest, root and count, and the drand round, are anchored on chain in the foundation's registry before
that round exists. Once drand publishes the round, anyone can finalise the call: the contract checks drand's signature
itself and stores the entropy, keccak256(digest ‖ signature). The verifier reads all of this from the chain
through an RPC address you choose, and says whether what it read is final or still provisional.
What you have to trust. drand's threshold committee, not to sign a round before its time; the chain, to record the anchor and keep it; and the two manifest approvers, for which entries are eligible. Not the foundation's servers or staff for the randomness: nothing they hold enters it, and nothing anyone chooses after the manifest is anchored does either. The foundation's multisig can void a call on chain at any stage, even after its draw; a void is public, permanent and carries its reason, and the call's id can never be used again.
